On a lovely sunny day in good ground conditions, and all the time in the world to complete your tasks, then working on a Sit-Astride ATV (Quad) or Sit-In ATV, can be a real pleasure. In good weather and on easy land we are less at risk than during the past 6 months of hostile weather that we have had thrown at us, but have you had some moments when you doubted your ability on the wet and windy slopes with animals to attend or a job to complete.
Training courses for novice ATV and Quad Bike riders are highly recommended. The accident rate is high and the HSE recommend initial training and a Certificate of Competence. We offer the Lantra Awards ATV training and assessment courses which cover all the necessary requirements over two days to comply with your health and safety responsibilities.
However, experienced riders are also expected to keep their skills current and undertake a refresher course periodically. A five year refresher programme would be a good suggestion for starters. Your company Health and Safety Policy could usefully specify how often refresher courses should be undertaken on the various pieces of machinery used in your workplace and this is required under the PUWER Regulations.
At Newlands Training we have an off road site, we have quads, or you can bring your own quad to our courses. We also can come to you and use your land and ATVs.
Happy and safe riding and driving!
