Why Proper Training Saves Lives – And Why It Shouldn’t Be Optional

Why Proper Training Saves Lives – And Why It Shouldn’t Be Optional

At Newlands Training, we talk a lot about safety. But sometimes, it’s the headlines that underline why our work matters.

In the latest HSE bulletin, a number of serious incidents have been highlighted – incidents that could have been prevented with the right knowledge, supervision, and training. These are not distant, abstract stories. They are a mirror held up to what happens when training is overlooked, underestimated or underdelivered.

Here’s just one example that struck particularly close to home:

Farm Worker Killed in Quad Bike Accident

A farm worker tragically died after the overloaded quad bike they were using overturned. The result was fatal spinal injuries.

This incident is especially heartbreaking because it’s so preventable. It’s a reminder that ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles), while common in land-based work, are powerful machines with serious risks. Without proper instruction on load limits, terrain, and safe operation, accidents can and do happen.

At Newlands Training, we offer Lantra Sit Astride and Sit-In ATV courses, which cover:

  • Pre-use safety checks

  • Load limits and stability

  • Legal requirements for on- and off-road use

  • Controlling ATVs on slopes and rough terrain

  • Emergency stop and recovery techniques

In short: the kind of training that saves lives.

What All of These Cases Have in Common

Whether it’s ATV rollovers, unsafe machinery, working at height, or unguarded equipment, every incident in the HSE report has one thing in common: a lack of proper planning and training.

  • No risk assessments

  • No certified instruction

  • No systems in place to check or challenge unsafe practice

We’ve worked with over 2,000 candidates in the last year alone to make sure they don’t fall into these categories. And we know that good training isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about confidence, competence, and knowing when to stop and think.

On-Site Training That Comes to You

One of the biggest barriers to training is logistics—so we remove them.

Newlands Training can deliver in-house courses across the South of England, bringing certified instructors directly to your site. You train on your equipment, in your environment, under your working conditions.
